Website Listing Service Fraud Alert: Web Listings Inc.

By Garrett Blanton posted on Monday, March 15, 2010 - (General)

Over the weekend I received an envelope in the mail that seemed to be an invoice for one of my domains. When I opened it up I found a bill for $65.00 from a company called Web Listings Inc., offering domain name submission to 20 established search engines, up to eight keyword/phrase listings, and a quarterly search engine position and ranking reports for 1 year.

As you can see in the images below, the intent here is to fool the reader into thinking that it is, in fact, an invoice that needs to be paid. Web Listings Inc. is sadly preying on unsuspecting domain owners in hopes they can get you to part with $65.00 of your hard earned money.

Web Listings Inc. states that they will submit your domain to 20 top search engines. Sorry to break it to you guys, there are only 3 top search engines! If you received one of these fake invoices, our advice is to just throw it in the trash, or if you have a fireplace, burn it! Web Listings Inc. uses dishonest tactics to try and catch unsuspecting people off guard. Their phony invoices are actually sign-up forms for a service that has absolutely no valid purpose for existing.

Protect Your Server By Turning Off Index Browsing

By Garrett Blanton posted on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 - (How To's)

JVF Consulting takes great pride in making sure all of our websites are secure when they’re deployed. Visitors to your website should not be able to browse or download files they’re not supposed to. For those of you with Apache servers who haven’t disabled index browsing these steps will help protect your files from being exposed to the public. When you deploy a website on an Apache server, it can be vulnerable unless you protect it by applying the most basic security feature, disabling directory browsing. To disable directory browsing in apache web server you need to edit the .htaccess file located in the root directory.

To disable directory browsing using .htaccess first locate and open the htaccess file. If you do not see a line that says Options –Indexes, create a new line and add it. Once the file is saved and uploaded your website is now secure.

For those of you who have cPanel installed on their hosting environment, first login to your cPanel dashboard. Next, click on Index Manager. From there you will be taken to a directory list. Click on the directory name which you want to disable. Select the No Indexing box, and click Save. The directory browsing feature is now disabled.

This simple 5 minute step of precaution could save you hours of hard work if your server was ever compromised. Here is an example of the 404 page you will be redirected to if you setup the htaccess file correctly.

Bit.ly Does Not Show Click Statistics In Firefox

By Garrett Blanton posted on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 - (General)

JVF Consulting believes in social networking and uses it as a tool to receive feedback from our customers. In order for us to share links with our Twitter followers and Facebook fans we use a web service tool called Bit.ly. Bit.ly is URL shortener which reduces the URL length and allows us to track the amount of clicks each link has received in order us to calculate our analytics and conversation rates. As of recently bit.ly has not been displaying the number of clicks in Firefox browsers on Windows computers. Apple computers running Firefox render the page just fine and the amount of clicks are visible.

With Firefox being the choice and default browser for JVF it makes us rather frustrated that bit.ly has not corrected this issue. In the screenshots below you can see the number of clicks is missing for each link. We have tested this several Windows machines running the latest Firefox 3.6 and we get the same results, Bi.ly does not work with Firefox!

Custom Professional Favicons By JVF Consulting

By Garrett Blanton posted on Friday, February 26, 2010 - (General)

We’re going to admit something kind of geeky. JVF really likes favicons. They’re not only fun, but it’s a great way to make a website stand out and give it a creative edge. Favicons allow your visitors to create a visual connection with your site and act as great branding tool. When JVF deploys a custom website, we make sure every aspect is dialed in before we deploy it, that means the addition of a custom favicon.

Favicons are also known as a website icon, shortcut icon, url icon, or bookmark icon. They’re a 16x16 pixel square icon associated with a particular website or webpage. The favicon is displayed in your browser's address bar, bookmarks & favorites list, tabs and even desktop shortcuts to web pages. Below are some of the custom favicons we have created for our customers that we would like to share with you.
