Google Chrome: Long Anticipated Browser Worth The Wait?

By Garrett Blanton posted on Monday, September 8, 2008 @ 11:29 AM - (Web Technology)
Things Are Getting Interesting In The Browser Universe.

If you have not heard yet, Google just released an open source browser by the name of Chrome. The question around the office lately is how does it compare, and does it support the JVF Consulting Amass content management system (CMS)? Well, to make sure JVF is up to par we downloaded the beta version and gave it a spin. So... should JVF and other web designers be freaking out? The answer is: No.

Thankfully the wheel was not reinvented here, it turns out Chrome uses the same rendering engine that Safari, Adobe AIR, iPhone, and Android use. Something called 'Web Kit'. So as web designers, we don't have to worry about another browser rendering our code crazy. Chrome was also designed to improve on the way it handles JavaScript, one of the technologies used to make Web pages more interactive. The focus on JavaScript makes sense. JavaScript can eat up computer processor power, and if poorly used by a website, can crash the browser. One of the things Chrome promises is that if one browser tab crashes, it won't take down the whole program.

Chrome does puts together usability, stability, and performance under one open source roof. By keeping this open source and giving away the code, Google is practically begging other browser makers to take pieces from their browser and incorporate them into their own. Expect Chrome to be a platform for experimentation, since its only being used by a small percentage of the population don't expect this browser to be perfected anytime soon.

Unless you're a web developer, or like living on the technological edge, I don't recommend installing Chrome. But if you're daring enough and want a glimpse of what Chrome looks like, you can download it here.

Peter Bruce: San Francisco Bay Area Wedding Photography

By Garrett Blanton posted on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 @ 3:10 PM - (SEO)

Wedding Photography Meets Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

The award winning San Francisco Bay Area photographer Peter Bruce provides fine portrait style and fashion style wedding photography to new brides and grooms. To show off his artistry he had an elaborate flash website designed and built. After the launch of the website getting visitors to find him was a real problem. It seemed like Google was not cooperating with his website, and it was not being indexed properly. This is where the JVF Consulting SEO team came into play.

Peter Bruce's goal was to be featured on the first page of the Google search results for "San Francisco Wedding Photography and Videography". To complete this goal JVF assessed the optimization of his current website. Come to find out the current site was all flash with little content and all pictures. There were no keywords in the title, no description, and no meta tags that would benefit his search results. The framesets of his flash site were hiding content from the search engine spiders, no wonder his search engine results were so poor!

When Peter Bruce first launched his site you could build a website and people would find it because there weren't many sites on the World Wide Web. You didn't need optimization, or anything special, to help people find his wedding photography site. This definitely doesn't happen the same anymore, those days have changed! Now you need to make sure the search engines recognize your site for what it is. Just having a website isn't enough!

Do a search for the word "Photographer" and your search engine will return about 139,000,000 results. Be a little more specific and search for "Wedding Photographer" 3,130,000 results, better but still a mighty big list. Even narrowing the search to "San Francisco Wedding Photographer" yields 557,000 results. Realistically, if your Web site is beyond the third page of results, or even the second, your potential clients will never find you.

A word about flash websites. They can be gorgeous and showcase your work beautifully, but they don't receive as good search engine positioning as a standard HTML sites. This is because there is very little text used in building a flash site. If you are serious about getting good search engine results, and really want Flash for your site, think about having an HTML site along with your Flash site or have blog embedded into your site with an RSS feed, rather than being a standalone flash site.

With that being said JVF Consulting began work. We ripped apart the framesets and flash, and what was left was a search engine friendly site for all the spiders to crawl. Once the site was crawlable we began with all the basics such as a competitive title, description, keywords, and sitemap.

Peter Bruce's website now incorporates flash and copy to provide the best of both worlds. The end result is driving his search engine results higher on a daily basis and pushing targeted traffic to his site without the use of Adwords or Pay Per Click campaigns.

If you are seeking a wedding photographer with photojournalistic professionalism, Peter Bruce is your man. He is passionate about photography and passionate about providing top notch customer service. With a few clicks around his websites you will find everything San Francisco has to offer you. To get you started here's some informative links to help you find exactly what you're looking for.

SwampDonky! Support Your Local Rock Band

By Garrett Blanton posted on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 @ 12:00 PM - (Marketing)
Creative Album Cover Art To Corporate Identity

Spawning a CD cover that stands out from the rest is just what JVF Consulting intentions were with this project. The importance of good quality artwork on your CD cover is what helps sell music after all. Of course the music that goes into the album helps, but who judges a book by its cover anyways?

The concept of the logo was brought to life after many group brainstorms and comps. After narrowing it down to the final 2 the band members took a vote and decided on their band logo and corporate identity. Now with a logo to be proud of you can now show your support for SwampDonky with some cool duds available at Zazzle.

SwampDonky is currently finalizing production on their 2nd EP, "Off The Hook," which is due for release in June 2009. It will feature six new originals, following up where the band left off with their debut 4-song EP, "All Over The Map," released April 2007. The band's signature track from their debut EP, "What Is Mine," was awarded Track of the Day honors at Garage Band.

In 2007, SwampDonky advanced to the San Francisco finals (following three elimination rounds) in the Emergenza battle of the bands competition (www.emergenza.net), held at the Great American Music Hall. SwampDonky's performance was well-received by the judges as the band placed 4th overall, and drummer Joel was awarded "best drummer" in the competition.

The band is currently booking Spring & Summer appearances throughout the Bay Area. To date, SwampDonky has played dozens of shows at several venues including the Great American Music Hall, 12 Galaxies, Rockit Room, Grant & Green, Beale Street Bar, Fat City, Blakes on Telegraph, and Rooster's Roadhouse.

On stage, lead vocalist and drummer Joel Anderson always impresses audiences with his power, precision, and classic rock voice. Tommy Huxley is a blues-influenced lead guitarist with chops (think SRV meets Slash). The band's sound is rounded out by Ryan Lorenzini on the rhythm guitar and Tony Ebster on bass. Both Ryan and Tony sing backup, and many of the band's songs feature 2 and 3-part vocal harmonies.

Thunderman Featured On KABC-TV Eyewitness News.

By Garrett Blanton posted on Friday, August 29, 2008 @ 1:42 PM - (Press Release)
KABC-TV Eyewitness Breaking News

When Thunderbolt Aerosystems Inc. announced the release of its Thunder Pack, a personal propulsion system capable of sustaining flight for longer than ever before achieved. Many skeptics and critics were quick knock it down. Concurrently Thunderbolt Aerosystems Inc. also unveiled plans to develop a jet powered Thunder Jet with exponentially greater capability. This is when KABC-TV picked up the news story and featured it on their local news segment seen by thousands of Los Angeles residents. If you missed the airing of this new story here it is again for you to see.

Bench tests of the new Thunderpack design have provided 75 seconds of flight time, a 300% increase over what other systems offer. With a recent test flight of 37 seconds, and a potential dual-fuel feature capable of flying well more than one minute, Thunderbolt Aerosystems is closer than ever to fielding a rocket belt "for the masses." It is one of Thunderbolt Aerosystems' main directives to make the ThunderPack available to the masses in a format that will use ubiquitous fuels. This will enable its more un-restricted use for metropolitan firemen, forest fire control forces, coast guards, Red Cross, border patrol, high-risk rescues and for any natural disaster extreme transportation requirements.

Thunderbolt Aerosystems founder Carmelo "Nino" Amarena must have seen the Sean Connery movie Thunderball because when he decided to try and shorten the grueling commute to his Bay Area office, he came up with what he says is a practical and economical personal air vehicle. One that won't blow up on your back like those hydrogen peroxide powered prototypes of the early 1960s. Keep up the good work Nino, we look forward to seeing you commute through the air someday!

Internet Explorer 8 Beta Fails To Please JVF Consulting!

By Garrett Blanton posted on Friday, August 29, 2008 @ 11:54 AM - (Web Technology)

Hands-on With Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8 Beta.

Here at JVF Consulting we are fiends for the latest in technology and software. Staying up to date with the most current versions of web browsers is a necessity for us, especially since we deal first hand with creating websites to work with these browsers. When Microsoft Corp. released the Beta version of Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) we were anxious to download it and give it a spin.

Upon installation everything seemed new and interesting. During the installation it wasn't really an install, it was more like an upgrade was in progress. The install went smooth, even though it did take about 5 minutes overall.

After patiently waiting for a reboot we launched the new Internet Explorer 8. Hoping to see a new look or interface we were let down. There were some small differences and features which left us scratching our head, but we moved on to why we really installed this browser. Our main goal was to test the websites we have built to ensure they will all work and look properly. At first glimpse we did not notice anything major, that is until we tried to log into our JVF Amass Content Management System (CMS). As you can see in the screenshots below we ran into a roadblock right off the bat. In Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) you can see that our username and password fields are centered on the login page.

Now check this out, in Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) our username and password fields are justified to the left. All of this is because IE8 can't center align a TD tag! Aligning a table column or a cell is some of the most basic html there is, IE8 fails at this miserably! After this bug we no longer had any faith in this new web browser and had to cease all further testing. This was not only a waste of time but another kick in the butt as to why Mozilla Firefox continues to lead the pack with their web browser.

Thankfully the uninstall was successful and IE7 is now running correctly on the machine we used. After reading other horror stories about IE8 we came across a warning put out by Microsoft Corp. This warning notifies users that if you're running SP3 on your machine installing IE8 may be permanent since uninstalls of the software were unsuccessful by many customers. You can find the article titled "Microsoft warns of IE8 lock-in with XP SP3" in the computerworld website.

Jetpack & Rocketbelt Manufacturer Perfects Propulsion Technologies!

By Garrett Blanton posted on Friday, August 22, 2008 @ 3:37 PM - (Marketing)

Thunderbolt Aerosystems website takes launch!

It has been a pleasure working for Thunderbolt Aerosystems. With their wealth of information, and our web technologies, we were able to create a website that is informative, easy to navigate, and appealing to all ages. Made famous by the 1991 Disney movie "The Rocketeer," the jetpack has been gaining popularity not only through word of mouth, but also the internet community. This internet community would not be possible if it was not for the implementation of our search engnine optimization package. At JVF Consulting we ensure Thunderman remains ahead of the competition.

Maintaining a website that receives web traffic by the thousands per day, from all over the world, meant that supporting all types a internet browsers was a necessity. The visitors of this site also require a fast loading page so placing their website on a standard server was not adequate. JVF Consulting hosts this site on a dedicated server that is fast, and can handle the load from the daily traffic.

Since the launch of their site the media frenzy began right away. Crave, which is also known as the CNet News blog, was one of the first to leak the story with the new article boasting that for $100,000, you get 75 seconds of flight which is faster and goes higher than any previous jetpacks. View the article here...

TMZ Productions was the next to spread the story on their Celebritoyz blog. The article titled "Finally, Jet Pack to Work" notes that if you're a celebrity, and have $90,000 to burn, you'll have the best 37 seconds of your life with this new toy! View the article here...

The goal of Thunderbolt Aerosystems is to one day make the ThunderPack available to the masses in a format that will use ubiquitous fuels. This will enable its more un-restricted use for metropolitan firemen, forest fire control forces, coast guards, the red cross, border patrol, and high-risk rescues or extreme transportation requirements. Videos of the jetpack in use can be found on YouTube or on the companies website located here...
