Google Does Not Use Keyword Meta Tags!

As professional website designers we are always conforming to the latest techniques in SEO (search engine optimization) in order to be successful in the SERP’s (search engine result page’s). We found that our new customers are now doing their history before choosing a web design firm to make sure their final product will perform correctly in all search engines. The term used mostly by our new customers is “keyword meta tags”. They want to make sure we include these meta tags, in hopes their website will increase in the SERP’s. They then pass us a huge list to embed into their website header. At JVF Consulting we do include keyword meta tags to all of our custom websites, but we really hate to break the news, Google does not use keyword meta tags!

Next time you’re reading an article on SEO and it tries to convince you to optimize the keyword meta tags to your website remember this. Googlebot does not even bother to index or interpret those keyword meta tags, but rather extract the keywords from the content of your website. When Matt Cutts the famous Google SEO software engineer was asked, “Does Google ever use the keyword meta tags in its web search ranking?” His response was, “In a word, no. Google does sell a Google Search Appliance, and that product has the ability to match meta tags, which could include the keywords meta tag. But that’s an enterprise search appliance that is completely separate from our main web search. Our web search (the well-known search at Google.com that hundreds of millions of people use each day) disregards keyword metatags completely. They simply don’t have any effect in our search ranking at the present time.”

If you still do not believe us, here is a Google Webmaster video explaining it all. This is not breaking news by any means, but there are still people out there who are putting too much thought and effort into their meta tags.

JVF Consulting Is Burning Our RSS Feed With FeedBurner

FeedBurner is the leading provider of media distribution and audience engagement services for blogs and RSS feeds. Their web-based tools help bloggers, podcasters and commercial publishers promote, deliver and profit from their content on the Web. Feedburner also uses cool terminology for your RSS or Atom feed like "burning a feed", which means syndicating your feed. JVF Consulting is now burning our RRS feed through Feedburner and is looking for new subscribers.

There are lots of good reasons for burning your Blogger feeds with a free service like Feedburner. Among the advantages are better feed presentation, detailed tracking statistics and access to the large choice of feed readers available. JVF Consulting uses FeedBurner for stuff like tracking which links in our RSS feeds are clicked on the most, how many people read our feeds, and which RSS readers they use. By checking such analytics we are making sure we are bringing you the content you want and need the most.

They are two ways you can subscribe to the JVF RSS feed.

1. From the browser address bar

If you look up on your browser now, you will see a small orange icon on the right side of your address bar. Click on it and it will bring you to a preview page with an option to subscribe using your choice of reader. It’s really that simple.

2. From the JVF website design blog.

On the left side of the JVF blog locate the RSS icon that says “Subscribe to RSS Feed”. Click on it and follow the simple instructions.

Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Is Not Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

At JVF Consulting we pride ourselves with our knowledge of SEO and its application. With every website JVF deploys our team runs through an internal checklist that has been tailored to each project. From time to time our clients are often confused as to what SEO is, and at times mistake it for PPC campaigns. This article should clear up any of the confusion between the two.

Search Engine optimization is a technique and series of services that helps with organic search engine results. PPC is pay-per-click advertising is one type of an online marketing technique. When you purchase visitors or "clicks" from a search engine, it is a called "pay-per-click" (PPC). Pay-Per-Click search engine advertising allows you to quickly get top search engine placement by "bidding" (paying) for keywords related to your product or service. The Pay Per Click model consist of advertisements strategically placed to gain traffic while SEO techniques are implemented both to the website itself, and also using off page factors. The main difference between PPC and SEO is that search engine optimization is not advertising.

Organic or natural search engine optimization (SEO) is accomplished by optimizing your web pages and by increasing your link popularity by acquiring or paying for links that point to your web site. This gives you high rankings in the search engines for your chosen search terms. With that said, the biggest weakness of search engine optimization is the time required to generate relevant links to your web pages and the keywords to get those prized high rankings you desire. Another misconception that people have about these two concepts is the speed of traffic to your site. PPC will help you gain visitors fast, but once you stop paying your traffic disappears. SEO is a slower process of increasing your traffic, but overall the visitors are more loyal,  and you don’t have to pay for them unlike expensive PPC campaigns. The online community may try to fool you by putting the SEO label on their PPC campaigns, but the truth is that you end up paying money for ads to take you to your site where you’re hoping they will click on more ads to make you money or purchase your products or services.

Wedding Photography Meets Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

The award winning San Francisco Bay Area photographer Peter Bruce provides fine portrait style and fashion style wedding photography to new brides and grooms. To show off his artistry he had an elaborate flash website designed and built. After the launch of the website getting visitors to find him was a real problem. It seemed like Google was not cooperating with his website, and it was not being indexed properly. This is where the JVF Consulting SEO team came into play.

Peter Bruce's goal was to be featured on the first page of the Google search results for "San Francisco Wedding Photography and Videography". To complete this goal JVF assessed the optimization of his current website. Come to find out the current site was all flash with little content and all pictures. There were no keywords in the title, no description, and no meta tags that would benefit his search results. The framesets of his flash site were hiding content from the search engine spiders, no wonder his search engine results were so poor!

When Peter Bruce first launched his site you could build a website and people would find it because there weren't many sites on the World Wide Web. You didn't need optimization, or anything special, to help people find his wedding photography site. This definitely doesn't happen the same anymore, those days have changed! Now you need to make sure the search engines recognize your site for what it is. Just having a website isn't enough!

Do a search for the word "Photographer" and your search engine will return about 139,000,000 results. Be a little more specific and search for "Wedding Photographer" 3,130,000 results, better but still a mighty big list. Even narrowing the search to "San Francisco Wedding Photographer" yields 557,000 results. Realistically, if your Web site is beyond the third page of results, or even the second, your potential clients will never find you.

A word about flash websites. They can be gorgeous and showcase your work beautifully, but they don't receive as good search engine positioning as a standard HTML sites. This is because there is very little text used in building a flash site. If you are serious about getting good search engine results, and really want Flash for your site, think about having an HTML site along with your Flash site or have blog embedded into your site with an RSS feed, rather than being a standalone flash site.

With that being said JVF Consulting began work. We ripped apart the framesets and flash, and what was left was a search engine friendly site for all the spiders to crawl. Once the site was crawlable we began with all the basics such as a competitive title, description, keywords, and sitemap.

Peter Bruce's website now incorporates flash and copy to provide the best of both worlds. The end result is driving his search engine results higher on a daily basis and pushing targeted traffic to his site without the use of Adwords or Pay Per Click campaigns.
