Financial Advisor Creates Compelling Presentations With Web-Based Tools

Google Presentations

Jim Koch Shows Other Advisors How New Technology Can Improve Client and Prospect Communications

Alamo, CA March 9, 2012 - Financial advisors who want to improve the way they communicate with clients and prospects should look to new web-based technologies, says Jim Koch, the Founder and Principal at Koch Capital Management LLC. After discovering the ease and mobility of Google Presentation, part of the Google Apps product suite, Mr. Koch now creates all his client and promotional presentations online. Since embracing Google Apps three years ago, Mr. Koch hasn't created a single Microsoft PowerPoint or Adobe PDF presentation.

“The best part of Google Presentation is that not only can you run your presentations on your iPhone, Android, iPad, Chromebook and Kindle devices, but you can also control who views them,” said Mr. Koch.

Mr. Koch also uses another online resource, MindMeister, which generates web-based mind maps. These maps are traditionally used for idea outlining and group brainstorming, but according to Mr. Koch, a web-accessible mind map is also a great way to visually link to other web-based products and services for easy navigation during a live demonstration. “By combining Google Presentation with MindMeister, you can put together highly interactive presentation that your audience can play along with in real time,” said Mr. Koch.

At the Technology Tools for Today (T3) conference, held from February 16–18 in Dallas, Mr. Koch demonstrated how advisors could use this combination of visual tools with tablet devices in their practices. Both his Google Presentation and MindMeister mind map are publicly viewable at www.tinyurl.com/T3Tablet2012. There is also a YouTube video available that provides mind map navigation tips: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQZEE0UR40g.

The goal of the T3 conference is to help financial advisors discover new tools they can use to advance their practices. Learn more about Technology Tools for Today at www.technologytoolsfortoday.com.

Hire Locally! Choose A Website Design Company Near You

By Garrett Blanton posted on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 - (Website Design)
Website Design Strategic Planning

At JVF Consulting we have heard many horror stories about businesses outsourcing their website work to save money, only to experience a lack of expertise and service that they deserve. Contracting with cheap website designers may incur a lower cost, but their designs are derived from templates and not customized to fully fit your goals. Choosing the best person to create your site will take a little time and effort, but it's worth it to ensure the web designer you select is the best person for the job.

Local web design companies such as JVF, are able provide a better level of service because we’re familiar with your demographic, and can meet you on a personal level. We take the time to get to know all about your company and the services or products you provide. Being a local web design company we know your community, your customers, and how you can better serve them.

By hiring locally you will also have an opportunity to personally understand the team of people designing your website. Isn’t it nice to know and trust the people working on your website? Professional web designers care about the web design profession as a whole. Promoting good website design and development helps our industry to grow.

At JVF we prefer that you hire a qualified, reputable website designer whether it’s us or someone else.  There are thousands of web designers out there for you to choose from, so you can afford to be selective. If you don't get a good impression from any particular company, take your money and your business elsewhere!

Prevent Lazy Load From Hiding Your Blog Advertisements

By Garrett Blanton posted on Friday, February 17, 2012 - (How To's, Tips & Tricks)
jQuery LogoRecently one of our clients was experiencing an issue with their advertisements not showing up when their wordpress blog loads. While troubleshooting the issue we found that the culprit was Lazy Load. Lazy loader is a jQuery plugin written in JavaScript which delays the loading of images until they’re in the visible part of web page.

Since lazy load was doing its job too well and preventing their advertisements from loading quickly, we took advantage of the “container” class used in the wordpress theme to fix the issue. This fix tells Lazy Load to only fire on images within the HTML object and not fire anywhere else on the page. This way lazy load is focused and doesn’t try to lazy load any of your advertisements or anything else on the page.

Here are the steps we took to fix the advertisement from being hidden when the blog loaded.

  1. First edit the source code of the plugin. To do so go the plugin’s page in your wordpress dashboard.
  2. Next locate “jQuery lazy load plugin” then click the “edit” button.
  3. Insert (#container) within the existing code found below. This will disable lady load from firing on all of the images outside of the scrolling blog container.
  4. Click “update file” when complete.
        function jquery_lazy_load_ready() {
$placeholdergif = plugins_url('images/grey.gif', __FILE__);
echo <<
jQuery(document).ready(function($){
if (navigator.platform == "iPad") return;
jQuery("#container img").not(".cycle img").lazyload({
effect:"fadeIn",
placeholder: "$placeholdergif"

We recommend using lazy load on long web pages that contain many large images because it not only makes the page load faster, but it reduces the load on your server. Although using Lazy Load out of the box without applying this quick fix it could lead to slower load times for blogs rich in images and content.

Yellow Page Resources Warning!

By Garrett Blanton posted on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 - (General)
Yellow Page Resource

If you get a call from Yellow Page Resources requesting that it’s time to renew your ad, be very careful. Make sure you do not agree to anything or else you will find yourself receiving a bill for $500 in the mail for their worthless, overpriced service.

Unfortunately this deceit recently happened to one of our clients. A receptionist received a call stating that it’s time to renew their web based services. The sales caller first flustered the receptionist then convinced them that if they did not verbally authorize the service that everything would be turned off.  Since they thought these services pertained to their existing account, and a boss was not around to ask, they approved their services. Within a few days they received an invoice for their rendered web based services.

When the invoice arrived, our client called Yellow Page Resources immediately to try and fight the charges stating that nobody authorized their services. The manager at Yellow Page Resources then played back the phone conversation to prove that the receptionist did in fact give authorization. Ultimately, they ended up paying the $491.45, and then called back immediately to cancel the account. The word around their office now is to never authorize anything on the phone again without prior approval.

JVF Consulting hates to hear horror stories such as these. Our recommendation is to NEVER accept an offer that requires your verbal approval on the phone, no matter who is calling you.
