Google Does Not Use Keyword Meta Tags!

As professional website designers we are always conforming to the latest techniques in SEO (search engine optimization) in order to be successful in the SERP’s (search engine result page’s). We found that our new customers are now doing their history before choosing a web design firm to make sure their final product will perform correctly in all search engines. The term used mostly by our new customers is “keyword meta tags”. They want to make sure we include these meta tags, in hopes their website will increase in the SERP’s. They then pass us a huge list to embed into their website header. At JVF Consulting we do include keyword meta tags to all of our custom websites, but we really hate to break the news, Google does not use keyword meta tags! 

Next time you’re reading an article on SEO and it tries to convince you to optimize the keyword meta tags to your website remember this. Googlebot does not even bother to index or interpret those keyword meta tags, but rather extract the keywords from the content of your website. When Matt Cutts the famous Google SEO software engineer was asked, “Does Google ever use the keyword meta tags in its web search ranking?” His response was, “In a word, no. Google does sell a Google Search Appliance, and that product has the ability to match meta tags, which could include the keywords meta tag. But that’s an enterprise search appliance that is completely separate from our main web search. Our web search (the well-known search at Google.com that hundreds of millions of people use each day) disregards keyword metatags completely. They simply don’t have any effect in our search ranking at the present time.” 

If you still do not believe us, here is a Google Webmaster video explaining it all. This is not breaking news by any means, but there are still people out there who are putting too much thought and effort into their meta tags.

SEO Tips & Tricks: HTML < h1> to < h6> Header Tags

Search Engine Optimization is the focus of every website JVF Consulting deploys to the World Wide Web. When a new website is on our drawing board, the first question our SEO teams asks he designers is, “Where will we put the h1 tags?”. As simple as the question may seem, most often times the h1 tags have been left out, or there is no room left for them on the page. The importance of the header tags are so great, we will continue to build the website until all the pieces fit perfectly.

For those of you who are not familiar with header tags, I’ll do my very best to explain them as simple as possible. Basically heading tags help structure a webpage and highlight the topics within. Header tags are used to emphasize the importance of a certain text within a page. The h1 element is a heading, the topmost out of six you can use. In other words, there are six headings available in HTML. h1, h2, h3, h4, h5 and h6, with h1 having the most importance, and h6 having the least importance. Therefore, if you use h1 tags (the most important header tag) with a keyword, it’s like you’re telling to your site visitors and the search engine spiders that the topic is very important. Google and the other major search engines will know a heading tag when they see one, and always treat it as important relevant information.

One problem some developers have with the h1 tag is that it’s often too big and unappealing to use. In most browsers the h1 tag is a huge font that can look out of place on a page, unless it is properly formatted. Fortunately, you can get the best of both worlds by using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). By using CSS, you’re able to tell the browser to display the h1 tag and other tags on your page to look any way you like. This is the trick that most developers are not completely aware of. If you follow these CSS instructions correctly you can get the best of both worlds, which is a boost in keyword relevance, and better control of your site’s look.

Here is an example of what the header tags will look like on a webpage that does not have the CSS hack applied.

To trick your header tags you must locate and edit the style sheet of your website. Once you have located your style sheet edit the file to look like this:

Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Is Not Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search Engine optimization is a technique and series of services that helps with organic search engine results. PPC is pay-per-click advertising is one type of an online marketing technique. When you purchase visitors or “clicks” from a search engine, it is a called “pay-per-click” (PPC). Pay-Per-Click search engine advertising allows you to quickly get top search engine placement by “bidding” (paying) for keywords related to your product or service. The Pay Per Click model consist of advertisements strategically placed to gain traffic while SEO techniques are implemented both to the website itself, and also using off page factors. The main difference between PPC and SEO is that search engine optimization is not advertising.

Organic or natural search engine optimization (SEO) is accomplished by optimizing your web pages and by increasing your link popularity by acquiring or paying for links that point to your web site. This gives you high rankings in the search engines for your chosen search terms. With that said, the biggest weakness of search engine optimization is the time required to generate relevant links to your web pages and the keywords to get those prized high rankings you desire. It can literally take up to 3 months before reaping the benefits of your search engine optimization campaign.

Another misconception that people have about these two concepts is the speed of traffic to your site. PPC will help you gain visitors fast, but once you stop paying your traffic disappears. SEO is a slower process of increasing your traffic, but overall the visitors are more loyal,  and you don’t have to pay for them unlike expensive PPC campaigns. The online community may try to fool you by putting the SEO label on their PPC campaigns, but the truth is that you end up paying money for ads to take you to your site where you’re hoping they will click on more ads to make you money or purchase your products or services.

Optimize WordPress Permalinks For Better Indexing

So you have deployed and setup your new WordPress blog, but you want it to be indexed by Google and the other search engines as soon as possible. For spiders to easily find the content on your website it is best to use permalinks that contain the title of your post while not containing any characters such as: &, %, #, etc. 

Using the title of the blog post as the permalink is best because it contains keywords that are related to your article. If you are hosting your WordPress blog on an Apache server then you will also have to modify your .htaccess file. Just follow these instructions step by step and your blog will be indexed properly and fast!

To access your permalink settings first log into your WordPress dashboard. Next click on “Settings”, then click “Permalinks”.

There are four basic types of WordPress permalinks that can be found in the Permalink Settings located under the general settings tab. By default the “Ugly” way is selected, so urls will be displayed this way. “http://www.sistasizing.com/?p=123”

To change the permalink structure to only include the title of the post first select Custom Structure. Next enter /%postname%/ into the blank box to the right.

Now that you have made those changes your blog will correctly use the title in the url of your post. If you are hosting your WordPress blog on an Apache server running linux you will have to edit the .htaccess file. To get the permalinks to function properly I added the following code to the .htaccess file. Just copy and paste the following code into your .htaccess file to get it to work properly. Just be sure to change the url so it matches your blog url.
